Selfish, Selfless or Somewhere in the Middle?

Do we as individuals get as INVOLVED as we could? Do we HELP as much as we could? Or are we too busy taking care of our own?

If we do want to help, do we think our efforts will be in vein? (For example, thinking that there's only so much I can do and so much needing to be done).
I ask myself these questions. And there is no doubt that it feels overwhelming just in the asking.

If we help, WHO do we help and HOW exactly do we help? And do we trip ourselves and our efforts up on these questions?

Are we defining our capabilities (and actions) by our perceived limitations? I mean, are we really truly too busy or to poor? Or is it just a matter of perspective? Out of sight, out of mind. Ignorance is bliss. Blah blah blah - fingers in ears, humming.

Do some people spend a good portion of their lives helping, and others just spend their lives? I don't want to be the latter, and maybe I'm not going to be the former... but there's a lot of potential in between the two.

I'd like to do something really BIG; I just don't know what. So do these big thoughts and ideologies hinder me from starting small? Because there's really nowhere else to begin.

This is my New Years' QUESTION to myself: Why am I not helping others more?

Scheme of Things

The winter sun is a welcome sight and warm, enveloping feeling, and it prides me to see it overtaking the entire sky overhead. I think of the grand universe we're in and how we're just a speck... but a dazzling speck at that. We may be small - teeny tiny in fact - but we are more fortunate than we can bare to comprehend. We exist on a friendly planet. And what hardship comes will only make us wiser... Even if someday to begin anew, a teeny tiny speck of physical matter that must grow in order to contain our budding spirit for life.
